French eyewear: acetate, character and the brands to know

Journal · Origin

If Japanese eyewear stands out for what it removes, French eyewear stands out for what it adds: thickness, colour, a shape you can see from across the room.

Why they’re different

France has a historic eyewear district in the Jura area, around Oyonnax and Morez. Here cellulose acetate has been the home material for a century: it’s worked from the sheet, cut, milled and hand-polished, in steps that take days.

The taste is different too. French frames often have thick fronts, sharp corners, keyhole bridges and full colours: glossy black, dark havana, crystal, or bright tints. They are designed to be seen.

Fit follows the same principle. Thick acetate carries strong prescriptions well and can be adjusted to the face with heat, in store, in the hands of an optician. It weighs more than titanium, but on a face with strong features that visual weight is exactly what works.

It’s a frame that takes a position. People who choose it don’t want to go unnoticed, and they usually wear it for years.

How to recognise them

  • The thickness of the front. Look at it from the side: French acetate is often fuller, and the lens edge stays well covered.
  • The keyhole bridge. Many models have a bridge shaped like a keyhole, a design that comes from the archives of the 1950s and 1960s.
  • The polish. The surface is deep and even, with no milling marks. On models made from archive acetate, the colour has a pattern that never repeats exactly.

Three models at OCCHIO!

Three brands with three stories. Ahlem is designed in Los Angeles and handmade in France, with shapes inspired by the neighbourhoods of Paris. Lesca Lunetier, in the Jura, revives archive designs and still works vintage acetate sheets. Peter and May, a French brand, makes acetate frames in full colours.
