AKONI Crafted Cosmo. Thirty hours to shape horn

Pale streaks emerge across the dark front. They follow the bridge, cross the lens rims and reappear along the temples. This is where the first encounter with Crafted Cosmo begins: in the pattern of the horn, which varies from frame to frame.

The shape carries the bold character of AKONI’s Cosmo. In the Horn Series, the material invites a different way of looking. A closer view reveals the grain, the shifts in colour and the depth of the surfaces. Details that encourage you to pause.

01 / The material

A surface to explore up close

AKONI chooses water buffalo horn for this interpretation of Cosmo. In the black version with white streaks, contrast reveals the natural pattern of the material: some lines remain fine, while others broaden into lighter areas.

The photographs show the grain crossing the shape without necessarily following its outline. It gathers at the bridge and opens out towards the sides of the front. The geometry of the frame and the pattern of the material meet differently each time.

02 / The time

Thirty hours, from horn to frame

For each Crafted Cosmo, AKONI describes around thirty hours devoted to hand carving, sculpting and finishing. The number takes on a different meaning when you look at the workshop photographs: the rough fronts, the separate temples, the work on the edges and surfaces.

The change from the first outline to the finished frame is particularly clear in the details. The profile becomes more defined, the volumes take shape, and transitions between surfaces become continuous. Looking at the making helps you recognise those gestures in the finished frame.

The name Crafted Cosmo draws attention to this process. The series brings the construction of the frame into close contact with the material, retaining the qualities that make horn recognisable.

03 / The shape

Cosmo, from three viewpoints

Crafted Cosmo follows a Wellington shape: a broad front, a pronounced upper profile and gently softened corners. From the front, the horizontal line and the relationship between the two lenses stand out.

Seen from a three-quarter angle, the frame reveals the thickness of the front and its transition towards the temples. From the side, the grain continues along the frame beside the metal details. Each angle adds something to our understanding of the shape.

The version offered by OCCHIO is an optical frame in black horn with white streaks. Its measurements are 52–22–147 mm: 52 mm for the lens width, 22 mm for the bridge and 147 mm for the temples. These provide a starting point for comparison with your current glasses; proportions, thickness and how the frame sits on your face complete the choice.
