Independent eyewear brands at OCCHIO!

Independent eyewear means frames designed and made by people who own their brand, in small runs, often by hand. No licences, no logos borrowed from fashion houses. OCCHIO! brings around forty of these designers together in one boutique in Crema, Italy, and ships them worldwide. Here is who they are, grouped by where the frames are made.

Made in Japan

Akoni, Swiss design made by hand in Japan in titanium, acetate and buffalo horn. EYEVAN 7285 and EYEVAN, Sabae since 1972. Masunaga, Fukui since 1905. KameManNen, the first titanium glasses in the world, 1981. T HENRI, hypercar lines in numbered runs of 199. Julius Tart Optical, the New York archive remade in Japanese acetate. TVR, True Vintage Revival, 1960s American shapes. Sauvage, archive eyewear from Japan. Kazoku and Mr. Gentleman, Tokyo.

Made in Italy

Kuboraum, designed in Berlin, handmade in Italy: the Masks. Piero Massaro, three Silmo d'Or, atelier near Venice. Sestini, Florence, numbered pieces with the lily on the hinge. VAVA, Treviso, architecture in acetate. Oscar Magnuson, Swedish design, Italian acetate worked by hand. Clarissa Oliverio, hand-decorated fronts in editions of a few pieces. Paloceras and Leisure Society, titanium and gold.

Made in France

Lesca Lunetier, Paris since 1964, sculpted acetate in small series. AHLEM, designed in Los Angeles, made in Oyonnax with 22-carat gold plating. Peter and May, Paris. Caroline Abram, Paris, frames for women with bold colour. Andrivet, limited editions in horn and precious materials.

Made in Britain and Northern Europe

Cubitts, London, every model in up to five sizes. CHIMI, Stockholm, colour-first sunglasses. OKKUL, engineered shapes in small runs.

Why it matters

A frame from an independent house is drawn by the person whose name is on it and made in the quantities that hand work allows.
