The brand

AHLEM Glasses & Sunglasses

AHLEM glasses are designed in Venice, California, and handmade in small batches in Oyonnax, France. The brand was founded in 2014 by Ahlem Manai-Platt, a Paris-born designer based in Los Angeles, where AHLEM has its flagship boutique; a second is in New York.

History and workshop

Oyonnax is a community of French eyewear ateliers. During production every pair travels through three specialised workshops and the hands of nine artisans. The constant aesthetic reference is the Bauhaus principles of the early twentieth century: shapes reduced to essentials, decisive thicknesses, bevels and engravings you only see up close. The acetate is paired with metal electroplated in 22-carat gold. From the Journal: AHLEM. Between Paris and Los Angeles · AHLEM Paris Collection.

Lines and models

The names come from the geography of Paris: Rue Mazarine, Rue du Soleil, Place du Louvre, Palais Garnier, Pont des Arts, Champ de Mars, Rivoli, Turbigo, Sacré Cœur. The OCCHIO! selection holds more than 130 frames across optical frames and sunglasses, in acetate and metal. The limited-edition Paris Collection has a double rim: Paris 01, Paris 03 and Paris 04. Other limited editions include Laplace, Pont Lincoln, Lombards, Bagnolet and George V, plus collaborations with Campbell Addy, Globe Specs and Gauchère.

How to choose

The sizes cover a wide range. For a small face: Paris 04 and Rue Léon (lens 44), Petits Champs (44/24), Rue de la Paix (45/24) and Paris 01 (46/23). Medium sizes sit between 49 and 52 mm: Tunis, Bolivar, Rue Mazarine, Rivoli, Rue du Soleil, Carrousel. The widest shapes are Harpe and Marguerite (56), Septembre and Haussmann (56–57) and, in sun, Laplace, 60 mm with an 11 bridge.

AHLEM: frequently asked questions

Where are AHLEM glasses made?

Designed in Venice, California; handmade in small batches in Oyonnax, France.

Why the Paris street names?

The founder was born in Paris: many models are named after the city's streets, squares and bridges.

What are they made of?

Acetate and metal, with metal parts electroplated in 22-carat gold. The Paris Collection is double-rimmed metal.

Can prescription lenses be fitted?

Yes, at the OCCHIO! boutique in Crema or by your own optician.

Where can I try AHLEM glasses?

At OCCHIO!, in Crema, 40 minutes from Milan and Bergamo, and online.

Do you ship AHLEM to Dubai, the UAE and Israel?

Yes. Every frame ships from Crema, Italy, by tracked express courier to Dubai, Abu Dhabi and the rest of the United Arab Emirates, to Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Kuwait, and to Israel. Any import duties and local taxes are paid by the recipient on delivery.

Do you ship AHLEM to the United States, the UK and the rest of Europe?

Yes. From Crema we ship by tracked express courier to the United States (free over 200 €, US duties are on us: nothing to pay on delivery), to the United Kingdom (free over 299 €, any duties paid on delivery), to Switzerland and Liechtenstein (25 €, free over 150 €, any duties paid on delivery), to every EU country, Ireland included (15 €, free over 150 €, no customs duties and no import VAT) and to Norway (15 €, free over 150 €, Norwegian VAT and any duties paid on delivery). See our pages for the US, the UK and Scandinavia.

How do you read AHLEM frame measurements?

Measurements are in millimetres and give, in order, lens width, bridge and temple length. Paris 01, marked 46/23, has 46 mm lenses and a 23 mm bridge; Harpe goes up to a 56 mm lens. AHLEM suggests choosing from bridge, temple and lens measurements as well as face shape.

Can AHLEM frames be ordered online with prescription lenses?

Yes, with single-vision lenses, which can be made remotely from a prescription and the pupillary distance. Progressive lenses are made only at the OCCHIO! boutique in Crema, because they need measurements taken in person with the frame on. AHLEM itself also points to a trusted local optician for fitting lenses.

How should AHLEM glasses be looked after?

AHLEM advises against leaving them in a car, as heat warps acetate and pulls the frame out of alignment, and against wearing them on the head, which stretches the temples. They should rest lenses up, away from rough surfaces such as sand, and be cleaned with the microfibre cloth, never with chemicals or a shirt.

What are AHLEM limited editions and collaborations?

They are frames made in small quantities, gathered by the brand under AHLEM Collectible: collaborations with photographer Campbell Addy, with the Paris label Gauchère and with the Palais Galliera fashion museum, and the reissues of Lépine and Louxor for the brand's tenth anniversary. The OCCHIO! selection also includes the Paris Collection and Laplace.

How long does an online AHLEM order take, and how do returns work?

Orders leave Crema within 24–48 hours by tracked express courier, and delivery time is added on top depending on the country. Returns can be requested within 14 days of delivery. Return shipping is paid by the customer, and the refund is issued once the parcel reaches the boutique in Crema.
