CUBITTS

Cubitts glasses were born in London in 2013: Tom Broughton launched the brand online in October that year and opened the first shop, in Soho, in 2014. The name comes from three brothers, Thomas, William and Lewis Cubitt, engineers and builders of nineteenth-century London.

CUBITTS

History and workshop

Cubitts' home is The Yard, a former industrial building in King's Cross: frames are cut and finished there, and lenses are edged and fitted in the optical lab. The signature is the rivet, a pin through each hinge, based on Lewis Cubitt's dovetail joint at King's Cross. Cubitts is an independent company and a certified B Corporation. The full story is in the Journal: Cubitts, London in a pair of glasses.

Lines and models

Square lines: Panton, Balmore and Frith. Round shapes: Ivor and Lidlington. Also in the selection: Plender, Carlton, Matilda, Georgiana, Cruikshank, Belvedere, Woolf, Wren, Lawn and Wakefield, the latter in Gold and Brushed Silver metal. Colours range from black and Dark Turtle tortoiseshell to Stone Blue, Olive, Celadon, Violet, Slate and Dune.

How to choose

Cubitts makes sizes from extra small to extra large: keep the shape you like and change how much space it takes on your face. Panton M measures 141.5 mm across the front, Panton XL 150 mm and Panton XXL 154 mm. Cruikshank goes from S (lens 40, bridge 20) to L (48/22); Carlton moves from 44/26 in M to 47/27 in L. Woolf (bridge 29) and Ivor (28) have wide bridges; Wren L has a 15 mm bridge. Compare measurements with our size guide.
