The brand
Julius Tart Optical Glasses
History and workshop
Tart Optical had its own factory in Manhattan and made its name with well-designed celluloid frames at a time when metal dominated. The revival starts from family documents and drawings; the collections look to New York style from the 1950s to the early 1970s. Lines and models
The AR is the reissue of the Arnel, one of the best-known vintage frames: lens 44 or 46, bridge 22 or 24. The FDR comes in 46 and 48 with a 24 bridge; the Harold in 43, 45 and 47. The OCCHIO! selection includes AR in Amber, Tokyo Tortoise, Sunshine, Demi Amber, Flesh Pink and Red Brown Gold; FDR in Black, Amber, Sunshine, Champagne/Pink and Light Brown Sasa; Harold in Black and Amber; and the Seafare sunglasses, in Crystal with G45 lenses. Every shape can take optical or sun lenses.
How to choose
These are small sizes, as in the 1950s: between 44 and 48 mm, with 145 mm temples. AR 44 suits narrow faces, 46 is the most requested size; the 22 bridge is for a narrower nose, the 24 for a wider one. Harold 45 (bridge 23) is the model's medium size; FDR 46/24 is wider at the same lens size. The Seafare, 51/22, is the largest in the selection.
